Marlene was born and grew up in Bobcaygeon. She was always very active, and especially enjoyed water skiing, golf, yoga, swimming, curling and bridge.
Her father ran the Bobcaygeon Independent newspaper for many years, which was across the street from the Kawartha Dairy. This may be where Marlene developed her love for ice cream.

Marlene and Bud spent their initial years together in Scarborough before moving to Markham and then to their summer home in Bobcaygeon. Throughout their life they always enjoyed spending time at the lake.
