Obituary of Maggie Hinton

Margaret Ellen Hinton

Beloved of many, Margaret (Maggie) Ellen Hinton, aged 73, passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of January 7, 2024. Loving wife of the late Dave Edward Hinton (2009).  Dear mother of Holly Hinton and Chris Hinton, both of Hastings.  Survived by her sister Lenore Lee (Ray) of Warsaw, and brothers Tim Riley of Buckhorn, Richard Riley (Shelley) of Vancouver Island and David Riley (Laurie) of Peterborough.  Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.  A four-time cancer warrior, she won many battles with an amazing determination to live her life not focused on illness, but upon the joy and purpose of her life. She was an inspiration to those who knew her bravery, humour, gentleness, and the light of her beautiful spirit.

A curious seeker, Maggie travelled in Canada, the US, and Europe. A lifelong learner, she worked in radio, theatre, graphic design, make-up artistry for film, television, and in political campaigns, was an equine masseuse for racehorses, and excelled as a professor in the Equine program of the Kemptville College branch of the University of Guelph animal studies. She was also a published children’s book illustrator, and a visual artist throughout her life.

Maggie also loved nature and animals, preferring rural life, and owning many rescue dogs and horses over her lifetime. In her retirement, she became a passionate advocate for horse welfare, both domestically and internationally.

Although her service will be a private family affair, those who wish to honour her are invited to donate to charities close to her heart, links to which are listed below. She will be deeply missed, and her memory cherished by many.
