Obituary of Maria Elisabeth Spahr
Maria Elisabeth Spahr, in her 78th year, of Apsley, ON, left us, surrounded by her loved ones on March 6th, 2022.
Maria moved to Canada from Germany as a young girl. She often spoke about coming to Canada and settling into her new home in Huntsville, ON. While she lived there, she helped run and operate her family’s successful local restaurant. Later her journey took her to Toronto, ON. During this next chapter in her life, she had many roles from running a small home daycare, to owing a few rental properties. In 1994 she moved to Apsley and decided that this is where she would set down her roots and call home.
Once she was settled into the area, she worked as a PSW for many years. Caring for the elderly was both a joy and privilege to her. Over the coming years her desire for entrepreneurship grew which led to her many endeavors such as the Hot Dog carte which fed many of us located in front of the IGA, the ice cream store which than lead to her desire to purchasing the building. During the last 20+ years she would grow her business that would eventually become The Heart of Apsley. She took pride in her business and to her it wasn’t just a job it was her passion. She went to work every day excited to see both familiar faces and meet new ones. Maria was so proud of the community that she called home. How everyone looked out for one another and how the community always came together to support various organizations, as well as our own. It truly takes a village.
Maria’s truest love was her family. She enjoyed spending her downtime with Paul, often you would find them sitting outside on the porch together. She was always there for her children and grandchildren. She was a great listener and problem solver. Having grandchildren brought her great joy, she loved their visits, attending sporting events, graduations, playing board games, and doing arts and crafts with them. She will surely be missed by them.
Maria was predeceased by her parents Elisabeth & Wolfgang Spahr and Brother Manfred Spahr. She is survived by her partner Paul Hill, Sister Monika Hoag (Joseph), three children Jennifer, Kristina (Christopher), and Drew and her eight loving grandchildren Zoe (Caleb), Logan, Addison, Isaak, Owen, Olivia, Allison, and Eden. Maria will also be missed by her nieces and nephews, and her beloved Golden Retriever, Buddy. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
