Marilyn & Family - I am so sorry for your loss. Jon was such an incredible man.
I had the pleasure of working for Jon for over a decade when I was studying to become an accountant. He not only helped me in my career path - but did his best to keep me on track in my life decisions too (tougher than it sounds)! He was kind and humble, patient and kind. He showed me the importance of making the numbers understandable to clients, so they could make smart decisions. He took the time to answer all their questions and spoke 'to' them - not 'at' them. He really knew and cared about the success of all his clients - and staff! He liked a good laugh and he did like to tease. I have many fond memories of the years we worked together.
He was, and will always be, the best boss and mentor! RIP Jon and I hope the fish are forever biting for you!

Our hearts are heavy for the Thornton family. Jon may have shied away from the spotlight but his presence was always felt. Smart, witty, master griller and bartender but above all, a dedicated and loyal family man. Marilyn, Brooke, Christine and Jessica, I so wish there were not so many miles between us right now. It's so sad to hear this news. Back in 1985 when I started Broadview Press, Jon became our company's accountant, and so he remained until the company went public in 1999. He was always not only a most able accountant but also the most helpful and kindest of souls--always friendly, funny, and very understanding of the financial stresses the company often experienced in those early years. I'll never forget how, when Broadview's office was badly damaged by a fire the day before a vitally important grant submission was due (in 1993, I think it was), Jon said to fellow Broadviewer Michael Harrison and me, "Well, if you haven't got an office, you'd better use mine." And that's what Michael and I did all that day, and we got the grant application in on time, and in due course we received the grant. Without it, the company might well have gone under. So in a very real sense, Broadview Press will always be in Jon's debt.
