Sue was the best friend of my childhood when we were in Tanzania together. We kept in touch for years after, visiting each other at our homes thousands of miles apart and adventuring on cross-country bus trips, staying in a log cabin in the woods, driving the tractor on the farm, challenging each other to be better by running and swimming until we got stronger and stronger. When I arrived in Tanzania as a scared newcomer in the 6th grade, she was friendly to me in a natural, easy way, and we became best friends quickly. In 7th grade she courageously walked out of class when a teacher refused to teach us, daring others to follow, but none of the rest of us had her courage. She and i rode bikes to the beach, traveled on the train across Tanzania with our moms and sisters, slept out under the baobab tree watching the bats overhead feast on the fruit. We had sleepovers, baked cookies, swam at Oyster Bay. One day we made a plan to meet halfway between our houses, and a tropical rainstorm hit so my mom drove me through the downpour until we saw a tall, skinny girl in green shorts emerge out of the sheets of rain. Mom dropped me off to walk the rest of the way in with Sue, and we arrived soaked through, singing, laughing, and splashing in the puddles. We were the "pals of the century" and wrote a song for it. We co-authored a skit in which our class spoofed our teachers at the International School of Tanganyika. She played the music teacher, doing a daring parody which caused that teacher to be cold towards her for the rest of the year. She was a courageous leader in so many ways. We lost touch for several years, then I saw a facebook post of Sue in a wheelchair. I wrote her very concerned, and she told me she had MS. Soon afterwards a mutual friend named Brett and I called her and asked how she was doing, and her response was "I'm doing great!" This, with progressive MS! I am so glad I went to see Sue summer of 2019, albeit too briefly. It was very hard to see the person who had been so active and lively completely paralyzed from the neck down...yet she was uncomplaining and cheerful. What an incredible soul, and the best friend of my youth. The world is a better place for Sue having been here, and my life has been immeasurably enriched.

Dear Pulfer and Oke family,
My deepest sympathies go out to you all. May peace, grace, love and strength help you through this time.
Although I had not seen Sue in her older adult life, I remember her as a teenager and young adult. I always looked up to her - she was beautiful, kind and smart, and she had a cute boyfriend with a wonderful smile (Rick). I have many fond memories of the Oke farm in Peterborough. The Oke family was our second family who always welcomed us (the Dorns) with open arms. I will carry the memories of Sue in my heart.
Love, Christine (Dorn) Martin

Rick and kids,
My heart goes out to you all! So many thoughts come to mind...
A wonderful lady, a fabulous milk tester, and an outstanding mom! I will never forget coaching T-ball and Sue was on the sidelines cheering on Jenny as if it were the World Series. Sue has always been my MS support, and will continue to be the lady I walk for each year. Many massive hugs and blessings!
Love to you all!

There are so many wonderful memories we have of Sue... times filled with laughter and fun, good friends and happy events. One memory that always comes to mind for me (Barb) is the day I visited Sue in the maternity ward in Peterborough the day after Jenny was born. Sue and I were chatting away when a very young, and very earnest nurse popped her head in the room and reminded Sue that it was time for Jenny’s feeding. Sue smiled and thanked the young woman and as soon as the nurse left, Sue turned to me and said “rule number one, never wake a sleeping baby!” I’m sure the young woman didn’t know that this ‘new Mom’ knew what she was doing. Sue will certainly be missed but she leaves behind an amazing legacy.
