Obituary of Anica Serences

SERENCES; Anica (nee Bosnjak) It is with both sadness and a sense of peace that we share news of Anica’s (Ann) death. After a lengthy illness, she passed away peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at Peterborough Regional Health Centre at the age of 83. Anica was born on November 8, 1936 in a small town of Habjanovci, Croatia. Eldest of the 4 children of Mirko and Zorica (Koski). Predeceased by her parents, brothers, Jozo and Marko, and her beloved daughter Rose Hughes (2005). Beloved wife of Antun of 61 years. Cherished mother of Lydia Pickering (and husband Cecil). Adored baka of Julia and fiancé Cameron, and Katherine. Anica will be missed by her sister Marica Novoselic and niece Verica Vuknic. Anica came to Canada on September 2, 1971, leaving her homeland and family behind, with her husband and two young daughters to make a better life for her family. Not speaking the language, she worked hard in shoe factories as a sewing machine operator. They settled in Mississauga, later moving to Toronto, Thornhill, Markham and retiring to Lakefield, Ontario. Arrangements are entrusted to HENDREN FUNERAL HOMES, LAKEFIELD CHAPEL, 66 Queen Street, Lakefield. A private family graveside service will be held on Friday, March 27, 2020 at 11:00. Due to the extraordinary situation of Covid19, we ask for no visitation at this time. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. The family would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to all the first responders and frontline caregivers, nurses and doctors that are making the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe.
