Obituary of Ruth Eva Beatrice Crawford
CRAWFORD, Ruth Eva Beatrice (nee. Murphy)
With sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Ruth Eva Beatrice Crawford on June 2nd, 2019 with family by her side. Ruth was born on April 25, 1927 to parents Steward and Lillian Murphy (Deceased). She was an only child and grew up on the family farm located at the head of Stony Lake. Ruth attended High School in Lakefield and graduated from Peterborough Teachers College, teaching at various elementary schools in Smith Township. On August 31, 1949, Ruth married James (Jim) Scott Crawford (Deceased) at the Carmel United Church, Stony Lake. Jim was a WWII Veteran and a local business owner. Together, Ruth and Jim operated Crawford’s Garage, a Supertest Gas Station in Lakefield until Jim’s death in July of 1970. She went on to raise their four children, continued her teaching career, then later worked as Office Manager for Pinewood Aggregates and Doughty Aggregates until her retirement. Throughout her life Ruth was an active member of the Lakefield community as a member of the Historical Society, Lakefield Minor Hockey, Retired Teachers Association, Rebekahs and the Golden Years Seniors Club where she loved to play Euchre. She also spent many days volunteering at St. Martins School in Ennismore helping elementary students, including her grandchildren, learn to read. Ruth is survived by her children, Steward (Gail), Winston (Kim), Elizabeth Jameson, (Lyndon predeceased), her grandchildren Kyle (Angie), Joel (Sarah), Tara (Curtis), Matthew (Christina), Nicholas, great grandchildren Tanner, Alana, Charlie, Grace, Nora, and sisters-in-law Fay Covert and Lorraine Crawford. Friends and relatives are invited to call at THE HENDREN FUNERAL HOMES, LAKEFIELD CHAPEL, 66 Queen Street, on Thursday June 6, 2019 for a visitation from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to St. Joseph’s at Fleming Palliative Care, the Kidney Foundation or Hospice Peterborough.
