I first met Norman in 1966 when I was a rookie teacher at Scarlett Heights Collegiate in Etobicoke. He became my mentor there and we became the closest of friends thereafter for the rest of our lives. In the ensuing years we never lost contact and he continued to be a loyal, kind and inspirational support to me throughout his life. Norm was an enthusiastic companion on all of our journeys, most great, a few not so much, but we managed them together mostly unscathed because he had an uncanny sense that humility, compassion and understanding worked better than other things did. I will truly miss him because he is somehow a part of me. In the words of an old Scottish Gaelic prayer, Norman, "until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand".
