Obituary of Susan Elizabeth McMillen

Sue McMillen (neé Susan Elizabeth O’Brien) passed away peacefully in her home on February 3, 2017, in her 73rd year. After a long illness borne with boundless grace and courage, Sue goes to her rest with all the love of her family and the many friends whose lives have been warmed by her gentle kindness. She leaves behind her husband of nearly fifty years, Larry McMillen, children Jen McMillen (Josephine) and David McMillen (Cynthia), brother Jamie O’Brien, sister Shari Selves (Floyd) and their daughter Lauren, and five grandchildren who won’t stand still long enough for us to get all their names. Sue and Larry travelled the world, living in Pattaya, Thailand (where Dave was born); exotic Sarnia; Montreal (where Jen was born); Vancouver; Toronto; and Port Dickson, Malaysia, before settling on Stoney Lake in a home they literally built together (with the help of family and friends). She loved and was loved by the local community, joining the Hamilton Bay Bridge Club and becoming a member of the Warsaw Women’s Institute. Sue was a tireless supporter of others: whether volunteering for years at Jessie's Place (a Centre for teenage moms), starting a women's support group for local and ex-patriate women in Malaysia, being a fixture in the staff rooms of her children's schools, or raising funds for the M.S. Society, she always did more for others than she did for herself. The world is a kinder, more compassionate place for her having been in it. She is predeceased by her parents Laurence O’Brien and Mildred Irene O’Brien (neé Scott). A celebration of Sue’s life will be held at the family home from 1pm to 4pm on February 11, 2017. Memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada (Peterborough Chapter). Condolences or donations may be sent through Hendren Funeral Homes, Lakefield Chapel at www.hendrenfuneralhome.com or by calling 705-652-3355.
