Rev. David Shearman posted a condolence

I only learned recently of J.D.'s passing. I am deeply saddened. John David was an ecclectic man. He knew much about many things, and like a true teacher shared his knowledge and insight generously. As a liturgist, John understood the subtleties I shall forever remember lighting a candle at Lakefield United Church with a BIC lighter and having John's booming Good God, Man! THAT'S not how you light a candle! echo in my ear, and his gentle description of how to do it properly. I shall always remember the two years that he and Connie Orr spent going over the records pf Lakefield United Church before they went to the United Church Archives. John and Connie's gales of laughter and John's booming exclamations usually preceded their coming to my office with the latest tidbit from the congregation's history or a juicy piece of a community story, now solved. Thank you, J.D., for laughter and for a life well lived. May you rest in peace and enjoy the best of life with God.

We were saddened to hear of John's death. Our condolences to our relatives ,Beth McMaster and others, and acquaintances, Jerry, in the Lakefield area. I have many memories of discussions with John in his visits to Cornwall, UK and my visits to Toronto ( he kindly put me up in his apartment in Scarborough when I visited Expo '67) and my visits over the years to Lakefield including twice in 2007. I am sure I speak for all below in remembering John and how he touched our lives in different ways. Godfrey and Reita Grylls and our children, Jevan in Australia, Roger and Teri ( and grandchildren Ian and Bryce ) and Victoria in St. Albert. Also my sister Peggy and brother-in-law Ivor in Cornwall, UK

I had the privilege of being taught by Mr. Grylls in 1982 which turned out to be his last year of teaching at Buchanan P.S., I remember when he left we all watched him walk away from the classroom window and not being able to take in that last sight, without turning around he raised his hand in the air and waved goodbye to us all. He had the most incredible ability to bring out the best in people, he was my most inspirational teacher and a wonderful man. I still often hum the songs he taught us while he played the piano. Last night I opened my bible and inside there was a dedication, To Annie Hrazdira, from JD Grylls, November 23, 1982. Thank you Mr, Grylls, I have always kept that and it is one of my most treasured possessions. Please know you left this world a much better place than how you found it, and touched so many lives. God bless you, you will be missed.

Sorry to hear of John David's death. John seemed an integral part of Lakefield; walking down the main street with his shopping bag & chatting with friends. On many visits, we would often talk about music, education, politics or history; JD was certainly well-versed in all of these areas. Frequently, he would play for church services at Young's Point. In Toronto, he would often head down to St. James Cathedral for Evensong at 4 p.m. on a Sunday . He was a great neighbour and friend to my parents and brothers. May he rest in peace.

I was one of John's first students when he started teaching at SS # 2 School at Lang Ontario. We loved him. He didn't seem much older than some of us. My wife and I visited John in Lakefield last summer, the first time I had seen him since the early fifties. What a wonderful time we had remembering those days in Lang! We will miss him.

I was a student of Mr. Grylls back in 1974-75. He taught grade 8 as well as music, he also taught my brother (1969-1970). He was a great teacher. The last time I saw Mr. Grylls was in Lakefield, must have been back in 1992/93. I was walking in town with my daughters and stopped to talk to him and he still remember me. My Husband and I have a trailer on Pine Vista Reort (Stoney Lake) and everytime we go into town I would wonder if he was still alive. My Condolences go out to his family and friends. He will be sadly missed.

I have fond memories of Mr Grylls as both my History and Music Teacher. I attended Buchanan P.S. from 1970-1973. In fact I was just speaking with a fellow student (Larry Marson) just a few weeks ago and we reminisced about our days at Buchanan and Mr. Grylls. My thoughts go out to his family at this very difficult time. May the music continue.

I was in Mr. Grylls' class in 1982-1983; he was a fantastic teacher and a very kind man. Each Christmas since I have heard The Holly and The Ivy and thought of him. With a fantastic raised eyebrow over his glasses, he would hammer away on the piano and we would sing like our lives depended on it. My mother had the pleasure of keeping in touch with him until just a few years ago and I always looked forward to his updates. He will be missed on earth, but will be welcomed in the Kingdom above.
